This event is sold out.

Janis Ian is making her first Caltech appearance and we are very excited to welcome her! She has won one Grammy award and had 8 more nominations. In the 1960's, she shared the stage at New York's Village Gate with Tom Paxton, Judy Collins, and Phil Ochs as a teenage singer and songwriter at a time where songwriters were pushing in new directions.

She rocketed to stardom with the song "Society's Child," which depicted an interracial romance and the resulting social pressures from family and peers. It became a national hit in 1967, but was banned in some places and was quite controversial. She again captured massive popular attention in 1975 with the song "At Seventeen," which wonderfully depicted the perspective of teens who are not high in the social strata and are largely ignored or shunned. It was a another trailblazing song, both in lyric and in musical style.

Janis has continued to tour and write songs and she retains the spark of individuality and expression that makes her shows so popular. Through the years, she has amassed quite a body of songs and personal stories which she will share. Hearing her in the intimate environment of Beckman Institute Auditorium will be quite a treat.

Tickets go on sale on November 1 and we suggest that you not wait till the last minute, as they may sell out before the show.
