25 Years of Directed Evolution - Arnold Lab Reflections Symposium
Our Guest of Honor: Frances H. Arnold, the Dick and Barbara Dickinson Professor of Chemical Engineering, Bioengineering, and Biochemistry at Caltech. Frances pioneered the field that has come to be known as directed evolution. Over the last 25 years, she and her lab have used directed evolution and elegant protein engineering methods to answer fundamental biological questions and create useful solutions to a variety of challenges in industry and medicine.
Seminars begin at 9:00 am and conclude at 4:30 pm
- Jacqueline Barton (Division Chair, Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Caltech): Opening Remarks
- Huimin Zhao (Steven L. Miller Professor, University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign): "Directed Evolution: Directing a Revolution"
- Chris Voigt (Professor of Biological Engineering, MIT): "Transfer of Nitrogen Fixation Between Species"
- Lori Giver (Vice President, Biological Engineering, Calysta, Inc.): "From Laundry Detergent to Aquaculture - Applications for Directed Evolution"
- Peter Meinhold (Co-founder & CTO, Provivi): "How P450 Engineering Led to Isobutanol-based Jet Fuel"
- Miguel Alcalde (Staff Researcher, Institute of Catalysis and Petrochemistry, CSIC): "My Story at the Frances Arnold lab"
- Florence Mingardon (Project Coordinator, Total New Energies USA): "From Directed Evolution to a Major Oil Company"
- John McIntosh (Senior Scientist, Merck): "An Unusual Wrinkle in the P450 Fold: Chemistry and Adaptation"
- Andy Buller (Postdoctoral Fellow, Caltech): "The Arnold Lab in 2016: Still Evolving"
- David Tirrell (Ross McCollum-William H. Corcoran Professor, Caltech): Closing Remarks
A reception in Dabney Garden will follow the symposium.
