PASADENA—The California Institute of Technology's Board of Trustees is pleased to announce the appointment of Sandra Ell as the Institute's treasurer and chief investment officer.
Ell had been the acting Caltech treasurer since August 1998.
"Not only has she overseen management of Caltech's $1.3 billion endowment with diligence and success, she coordinated a significant and challenging bond issue, and has managed operation of the treasurer's office superbly," says William Jenkins, vice president for business and finance. "Her appointment as treasurer is testimony not only to Sandra's success, but also to that of the excellent staff she has organized and manages."
Ell joined the Institute in 1984, and has served in several different roles within the finance organization, both on campus and at Jet Propulsion Laboratory.
After graduating from the University of California at Berkeley with honors, Ell attended the Stanford overseas program in Rome, Italy, on a fellowship. She is a Certified Public Accountant and has previous work experience with the U.S. General Accounting Office (GAO), where she performed studies to evaluate the effectiveness of various federal programs for the U.S. Congress. She also worked for the IRS as an auditor. She attended John Muir High School in Pasadena, where she was recently inducted into the school's Alumni Hall of Fame. Ell was instrumental in coordinating the campaign to pass a bond initiative to finance the construction of a new city policy building and is currently serving on Mayor Bogaard's citizen advisory committee. She lives in Pasadena with her husband, Victor, and both are members of the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Association. The Ell's have three adult sons.
